Great Yarmouth Worklessness Research

Great Yarmouth Employment Needs Study

Commissioned by Norfolk IiC

Autumn 2007

This research was undertaken to identify barriers to employment among residents in Great Yarmouth who had been unemployed between 3 and 15 months.

The workshops we organised were designed to elicit honest and comprehensive responses by establishing a non-threatening, trust building environment - in fact we chose a local pub. Through collecting extensive quantitative and qualitative data we built up a complex picture of the respondents - highlighting their experiences and hopes, their problems and their potential.

The overriding outcome of the research is the fact that every single respondent was not only willing to work, but saw getting a job as an absolutely crucial ingredient for a fulfilled life. Expectations of salaries were modest, full time work was preferred, and there was generally a good match between the skills and experience and the jobs applied for.

The full report contains a range of recommendations for interventions - from inexpensive quick wins to long term measures to build job brokering capacity in local community networks.
